From now through April, our program will focus on oyster restoration projects across the country. Did you know that a single oyster can effectively filter water at a rate of about 2 gallons per hour? These seemingly simple creatures are incredibly efficient at filtering toxins out of our water. They form thick, sturdy reef systems that provide integral habitat for estuarine animals while simultaneously protecting our shorelines against coastal erosion. Oyster reef restoration efforts have proven to significantly improve water quality and shoreline stabilization. As GTM Research Reserve continues with its oyster reef restoration efforts, we have partnered with South Slough NERR in Oregon to share research, methods, and discoveries in oyster reef restoration projects.
